Summary 246: Against Yaknath (2020-05-16)

Giraine Summaries

Hi,

You awaited the sea trolls in the pillared, frescoed hall of the Gloomshark cult, preparing yourselves and taunting them with insults. One tried to hide behind a pillar in the hall beyond but was easily visible; they stayed in ambush, roaring out threats. But then the sound of Yaknath came: roaring and howling, then stomping and smashing. A sea troll snuck up through the back tunnel and Miguel spotted it, so Boamund disrupted it and it rushed you, enraged, as Yaknath approached. Boamund quickly dropped the troll with a blow to the head and then Yaknath arrived, thundering down the stairs attended by three more sea trolls and then three misshapen human Gloomshark cultists/Blufont guards with spears, javelins and nets. Time for battle!

It didn't look good, with you outnumbered 8 to 4 and the trolls regenerating slowly as you hacked at them. Each troll had its own chaos power, too- one teleported in to attack Fraud, another had suckered feet so Miguel was unable to trip it, another (the hidey one) was symmetrical with large left/small right limbs, and the fourth had a terrible stench that would have left lesser folk helpless with retching, but not any of you. Ahappi fought the fish-reptile-toad demon Yaknath, who bristled with impaled harpoons embedded into its hide and trailed awful green slime from those ancient wounds that it now ignored. He managed to blind it with its own tongue early on, avoiding its massive snapping jaws (=3D6+1D8+1D10 Chomping spell and Devour spell that could hugely drain your MP if it wounded you!), and steadily dealing it blows to its left leg. Fraud, Miguel and Boamund at first had a hard time keeping the sea trolls down, even though they got tripped and/or knocked unconscious.

And it looked really bad once Boamund got impaled by a cultist's spear, although he withdrew it and survived. Miguel suffered some terrible bite wounds to his chest from trolls but healed them. And then the battle turned. With plenty of lucky attacks and great skill (and my very mediocre dice-rolling vs. your abundance of crits), you slew the trolls, with Miguel proving his worth well via his iron sword. The cultists soon died by your hands too, except one that saw the doom coming and fled, fearful more of spiritual annihilation in his (lack of) Gloomshark afterlife. So you faced off with Yaknath together, and its leg was crippled then its head smashed and pierced and slashed until it was just a wreck of tissue.

Yaknath had its final attempt at vengeance though-it instantly collapsed into a ~1m sphere of awful moaning void, which sucked in Miguel's and Fraud's shield, slowly turning bits of them into nothingness (this damage cannot be Repaired!). Boamund and Ahappi had leapt clear and extended weapons to help pull their friends free, which they did; and then the sphere imploded with a disgusting pop, like a lanced boil. This emitted a wave of soul-shattered misery and life-blasting despair, which you endured except for Ahappi who was left exhausted (and party luck pts now = 0). Yet the terror of Yaknath was gone!
